How bad the home ump really was for game 7

After seeing that last post of how bad the calling was in the 8th, I decided to go back and look at every single AB to see just how many calls this ump got wrong with focusing on strikes called balls. I found that a total of 42 clear strikes, none teetering on the edge of the strike zone, were called balls. I know umps dont always make the correct calls but to have 42 is absurd. Not to mention, the ratio of poor calls was 2-1 in Arkansas’ favor, almost half of theirs being in that 8th inning alone. Why this is so significant and changed what was a really close game to not all so quick was for I think a few key reasons:

1. 4-0 walk that led to Povich being pulled were all strikes, meaning Povich was pounding that strike zone and could’ve gone a lil bit longer.

2. The 14 calls in our favor were all spread even amongst the innings, with the highest being 3 pitches (top 3rd & top 9th); this maybe helped us with our 2nd run.

3. Moore’s homer AB in the 6th was him hitting a strike on a 2-1 count, when those first 2 balls were strikes, meaning after the foul on the third pitch, he’d be in a 0-2, which means Wynne would’ve had more flexibility with what pitch to throw rather than needing a strike

4. They got 10 of their 28 all in the 8th innings, which is huge considering we had two outs when Franklin came up to bat; was called ball, strike swinging, strike swinging and it first ball should’ve been called strike, leading to a strikeout after 3 pitches. Even giving him the first pitch ball, pitch 10 was also miscalled as a ball when it was a strike, which would’ve then been a strikeout. Either scenario you wish to have had, Franklin should’ve been a strikeout and ended the 8th inning

All of this considered, would we have won this game had the home ump been better? Who knows, Arkansas are #1 in the country for a reason but at least we would’ve had a chance to prove that we can rather than get handed the loss by the ump.
