Homers Lift Huskers to 7-4 Win Over No. 19 Michigan


The Nebraska softball team erased a four-point deficit in game two of Friday’s doubleheader with No. 19 Michigan, rallying for a 7-4 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Wolverines. 

The Huskers trailed 4-0 after the top of the first inning, but Nebraska was able to come within one after adding two runs in the top of the third inning and then took the lead for good with a three-run homer from Sydney Gray in the top of the fifth. 

The Huskers had eight hits in the game including a multi-hit performance from junior Mya Felder. Felder was 2-for-4 while Billie Andrews, Cam Ybarra and Sydney Gray all added home runs. 

In the circle, senior right-hander Courtney Wallace threw 109 pitchers in earning the win for Nebraska. Wallace (10-4) allowed 6 hits in 7.0 innings, and struck out four batters. Lauren Derkowski (0-3) took the loss for Michigan, allowing two runs in 2.0 innings. 

Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, a single and a walk put a runner in scoring position. A string of three singles scored three each. A ground out added another run, making it 4-0 heading into the top of the second. 

The Huskers responded with one in the top of the second. Mya Felder led off with a single followed by singles from Abbie Squier and Ava Bredwell. Caitlynn Neal reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Felder to make it 4-1. 

In the top of the third, back-to-back homers from Billie Andrews and Cam Ybarra put the Huskers within one. NU headed into the bottom of the fourth down, 4-3. 

Nebraska took the lead in the top of the fifth. Billie Andrews and Cam Ybarra both were walked. Sydney Gray smashed a three-run homer over the right center field fence, making it a 7-4 game. 

The Big Red was able to hold off the Wolverines, claiming the second game of the day, 7-4. 

Game Notes

  • Billie Andrews notched her 17th homer of the season in the top of the third.
  • Cam Ybarra hit her fifth home run of the year in the top of the third. 
  • Billie Andrews and Ybarra went back-to-back with homers in the top of the third. The last time the Huskers went had back-to-back home runs was against Boston University on March 12, 2022.
  • Sydney Gray smashed her eighth homer with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth.
