Has the lack of a nationally relevant rival hurt Nebraska?

Let’s think of the some of the great programs in the country such as Ohio and Alabama. Both have historic high stake rivalries. Recruits want to play the Ohio State – Michigan game. Recruits want to play Alabama – Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Etc.

Nebraska and OU used to be one of those rivalries but now is no longer. So why didn’t Oklahoma begin to crash after the NU – OU rivalry ended? Texas. They switched from one brand name rivalry to another. These schools compete directly with each other. Head coach success at Michigan and Texas is generally weighed against their record against Ohio State and Oklahoma respectively.

It’s the iron sharpens iron idea. There are countless other schools with rivalries like this as well.

I don’t think this is the sole reason for our struggles. There are many more. But I can’t help but wonder if Nebraska became part of the collateral damage from conference realignment
