Hardie Earns Second Big Ten Honor

Nebraska freshman Alea Hardie has been named the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.

The freshman is the first Husker to win multiple weekly honors in one season and the second Husker to earn the honor twice in a career after Erika Freyhof received recognition in 2018 and 2019.

Hardie set a school record with a time of 16:44.2, winning the women’s gold division 5K by 13 seconds at the Joe Piane Invite in South Bend, Ind. Hardie’s time edged the previous school record by four seconds, which was set by Sammie Resh with a time of 16:48 at the 1988 NCAA Championships.

The Sioux Falls, S.D., native is the first Husker to win three event titles in a season since Fran ten Bensel in 1991. The last Husker to open the season with three consecutive wins was Resh in 1987.

The Huskers are off this weekend and are split across two meets on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 14-15. A portion of the team will run at the Platte River Rumble on Friday in Ashland, Neb., while other members will compete at the Weis-Crockett Invitational hosted by Oklahoma State on Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.
