Haebig Advances to Wave II of Trials

Nebraska’s Autumn Haebig started opening day of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Wave I with a bang on Friday by winning the 100-meter backstroke final to advance to Wave II at the CHI Health Center in Omaha (June 13-20).

Haebig, an All-American from Grafton, Wis., raced to a career-best and Nebraska school-record time of 1:01.23 in Friday night’s final televised live on the Olympic Channel. Haebig’s time was 0.66 faster than any other swimmer in the final.

The 2021 Big Ten champion in the 200-yard freestyle, Haebig advanced to the 100-meter backstroke final with a career-best and school-record swim of 1:01.58 in Friday morning’s prelims. That record lasted less than 10 hours, before she shaved 0.35 seconds off that time in the final.

Haebig entered Wave I with the No. 4 seed time (1:01.91) in the 100-meter back and needed to produce a top-two finish in a 47-swimmer field in order to advance to the U.S. Olympic Trials Wave II.

Haebig’s victory in the backstroke not only earned her a spot in Wave II of the Trials, it also guaranteed her Wave II swims in both the 200 and 400-meter freestyles. She is scheduled to be back in the water in Omaha on Saturday morning to compete in the 200 free, while former Husker teammate Tori Beeler also will be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke.
