Greg Sharpe to miss Nebraska football broadcast

As he continues his battle against cancer, Nebraska football radio play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe will not call Friday night’s game against Illinois, his co-worker said on Huskers Radio Network Thursday evening.

Sharpe, diagnosed earlier this year with cancer in the pancreatic region, had called NU’s first three games of the year. He will miss Friday night’s game due a scheduled procedure, Husker Sports Nightly host Jessica Coody said, “to help out with his treatment.”

Coody said Sharpe hopes to return to the booth for Nebraska’s road game at Purdue. Sharpe appeared during the “Big Ten Blitz” portion of Thursday’s show. He often hosts the Sports Nightly program from a studio inside his home.

Filling in for Sharpe Friday night will be longtime broadcaster Bill Doleman, who is now a Sports Media & Communication lecturer for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Doleman has worked for a number of national and regional networks, including NBC, ABC, Fox, Big Ten Network and The Mtn, which covered Mountain West conference sports.

Doleman is part of a season-long rotation of professional broadcasters willing to prepare for a broadcast on standby, filling in as needed.

Sharpe has been NU’s play-by-play announcer since midway through the 2007 football season.
