Graduate transfer defensive lineman chooses Nebraska

Former Utah lineman Vaha Vainuku committed to Nebraska on Friday morning and will be immediately eligible this fall.

At 6-foot-3 and 295 pounds, Vainuku (pronounced Vy-ee-New-Koo) will add immediate depth to the defensive line in 2018. His route to Lincoln has been a long one. He graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City in 2012, and served on an LDS mission during the fall of ’12 and ’13.

Vainuku grayshirted in 2014, and joined Utah in 2015. He redshirted during the 2015 season.

Vainuku played in two games as a reserve offensive guard in 2016, but hung it up in 2017 due to injuries. He was set to graduate from Utah this spring.

Vainuku comes to Nebraska with two years of eligibility remaining. He’ll turn 25 in October.
