I hope you are enjoying your Memorial Day weekend.
We got to enjoy some family time and today will bring some overdue projects around the ranch.
I have several veterans in my ancestory, although most of my family has been farmers as far back as I can trace. Farmers were often exempted from military service (drafts) because their work was essential during war, but I do have quite a few relatives who served anyway. Most recently, my father was a maintenance officer in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
None of my relatives, as far as I know, was killed during their service. My father tells me of people he knew, including his first college roommate, who paid the ultimate price.
Despite barely being able to walk anymore and my brother doing most of the farm work (Dad is largely retired), you can bet he was out of bed early this morning with his American Legion jacket and hat on, ready to head into town. There are Memorial Day services in many (ok, most) small towns in our area. In those services, the names of those who gave their lives in service to our country will be remembered in some way. The high school band will play music – at least the kids who aren’t out camping or vacationing. Taps will be played. Speeches will be made.
Thank you to all who have served and especially to those who died in service.
We remember.
