The women’s basketball team learned of Kate Cain’s decision over the weekend. The 6-5 center and shot blocker extraordinaire has decided to start her pro career rather than return for another season of college basketball. I don’t know if she will hear her name called in the WNBA draft (she isn’t currently projected in any of the mock drafts I saw) but a rim protector of her caliber could catch a team’s eye. More likely, I see her heading overseas where, barring injury, I can see her having a long and successful pro career.
If she had returned, I would have looked for the Huskers to have the pieces for a top-four finish in the conference next season. A talented group of freshman, including two native Nebraskans, will be joining an experienced core of players led by all-conference honorees Sam Haiby and Isabelle Bourne. This should be a team that has the pieces to get an NCAA tournament bid. Of course, transfers or injuries could change that quickly. Hopefully, it is a quiet offseason for the ladies.
The baseball team picked up another series win at Illinois this weekend. Will Bolt’s team is tied for first in the Big Ten standings. More than that, this is a fun team to follow. Bolt and his staff aren’t afraid to call an aggressive game. This weekend included a suicide squeeze, stealing home, and double steals. There’s still time to get on the bandwagon!
