I’ll be honest here. A lot of new content that’s been released on Netflix during the pandemic is not stellar. The Queen’s Gambit is an exception. I won’t go as far to say it’s my favorite show ever (that’s ‘The Americans’) but it’s really good for a Netflix series. I never heard so many friends rave about a Netflix show before, therefore, I figured it was worth watching.
In a nutshell, it’s a seven-episode miniseries about a young Kentucky orphan who encounters a lot of setbacks and challenges on her way to becoming a chess prodigy. The series took place in the 1960s so I really enjoyed seeing all of the old-fashioned sets and incredible costumes and fashionable clothes from that era.
Of course being a great chess player means you travel a lot and I really enjoyed the travel scenes that took Elizabeth Harmon from Kentucky and Vegas to Mexico City and Moscow (that somehow managed to all be filmed in and around Berlin). The series had a great ending (I never recommend series that have bad endings). However, there are a few things I didn’t like about the show but I will post those in the comment section using the spoiler text.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts about the shows as well so I can’t wait to read them in the comments (please use the spoiler text option). Anyways onto Flakes…

Stakes Are High Saturday For Nebraska and Penn State | Football | Hail Varsity
The two opponents this week are in different spots in developing the program. Franklin has had a lot of success at Penn State, so his team is trying to regain the momentum it had in the preseason. For Nebraska, Coach Scott Frost is trying to get his alma mater off the ground to become the program he once knew. No one is putting more pressure on the program to return to glory than Frost.

A spokesperson for the team said the program has had several different opponents scheduled in principle but nothing has yet been finalized or announced. Creighton has Nebraska on its schedule for Dec. 14 in Omaha. Husker head coach Amy Williams and her program are expected to play fewer non-conference games than the men but 20 league games is still the expected conference schedule.

Of the 22 players who started against Penn State, nine of them were Mike Riley holdovers. Though none of those players were recruited to play in Frost’s offense or Erik Chinander’s defense, they nearly double the number of players from that 2018 class in the starting lineup. To be good in year three, Nebraska needed more than three true juniors or redshirt sophomores to earn significant roles, but it just hasn’t happened.
Cam Jurgens’ Consistency Remains Key For Nebraska’s Offensive Attack | Football | Hail Varsity
“I think anytime there’s a bad snap it’s a terrible snapping day,” Jurgens said. “That’s something I should have down pat and I need to keep working on that. I think in the game I need to be a little more focused. Sometimes I’m not thinking about it getting a little hyped up and then sometimes they’re coming a little high and hot and that’s something that needs to be perfect every time.”
Setting the Tone, Starting Hot an Emphasis For the Husker Defense | Football | Hail Varsity
“We’ve got to be able to cage the passer, cage the quarterback,” said defensive lineman Ty Robinson. “The pass rush has got to be better, obviously. We’ve got to get back there. I just feel like our pressure isn’t as good, but it’s slowly getting there. … I feel like we’re definitely going in the right direction. But, I definitely think the pass rush is what we’re going to have to work on.”
“He’s playing really good football right now and he’s doing his job,” Chinander said. “He hasn’t been going rogue or anything like that. He’s playing within the defense. He’s making the plays when his number is called. When you’re a really good football player, that’s what you do. You help other people and your teammates make plays when their number is called, and when your number is called, you make one.”
Nebraska’s class is ranked #1 in the Prepvolleyball.com rankings and is one of the best recruiting classes ever regardless of the sport, with the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 overall players. Also, Nebraska got the #1 player at setter, outside hitter and libero. Five of the top 16 players in the class will be Huskers.
The Big Ten is a beast of a league in 2020-2021, and even if Nebraska is vastly improved over last season — and the Huskers think they are — there aren’t many automatic wins when a league has seven teams ranked inside the preseason AP Top 25, and those rankings don’t even include Indiana or Purdue.
“If you’ve watched the Alabamas and the Georgias over the years — even Wisconsin — when they get in their nickel personnel groupings, those outside ‘backers become defensive ends and those defensive ends in the 3-4 truly become the defensive tackles — the nose guard and the three technique.”
Count the Nebraska women’s basketball team among the Husker programs who have been hit by the coronavirus. “We’ve definitely been affected,” Williams said Wednesday in an interview with The World-Herald. She declined to say who had contracted the virus or how many had it aside from standout center Kate Cain, who announced last spring she got COVID and has long recovered from it.

Just after Alaska Airlines flight 66 from Cordova landed in Yakutat on Saturday, the crew spotted two bears scurrying across the runway. After a safe landing, the pilots saw a bear, which was killed by the impact, lying near the center of the runway. Boeing 737 Max Given FAA Approval to Fly Again | Travel | Travel and Leisure
The FAA identified a few necessary changes to the 737 Max, however, those must still be installed in the aircraft. Then, the FAA will inspect each individual plane. Finally, pilots will have to undergo additional training before taking to the cockpit. The process could take weeks to months, depending on the airline.
According to Scott’s Cheap Flights, there’s no harm in clearing your cookies or searching for a flight in your browser’s incognito mode, but just know it won’t do anything for you. However, there are other things you can do to save. First, try searching in what they call the “Goldilocks window,” which sits 2-8 months ahead of international flights and 1-3 months for domestic.
The initiative, called Mālama Hawai‘i — or care for Hawaii — allows tourists to volunteer, getting involved in everything from tree planting, ocean reef preservation, making quilts for elders, to taking on a beach cleanup on their own time. The program has partnered with hotels across the islands to offer guests the opportunity to get involved and some are giving tourists a free extra night as a perk of participating.

Santo Domingo: The City That Kept Slavery Quiet | Travel | BBC
Few people realize that the Dominican Republic was home to the first black people in the Americas, who were initially brought here from present-day Senegal and The Gambia in the 1490s by Christopher Columbus. It was also where the Atlantic slave trade began in 1503 – 116 years before the first slaves arrived in the US Colonies. And, after Haiti, next door, it was the next nation to abolish African slavery in 1801.

Last summer I lived alone on a tiny island in the easternmost part of coastal Maine—a region known as Down East—where I worked as a sternman on a lobster boat. I say “sternman” because nobody says “sternwoman.” I could count the number of female captains in the harbor on my hand.

Since the Asian beetle was first discovered in Michigan in 2002, it has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across half the continent and caused tens of billions of dollars of damage.

Leo Tolstoy Ghosted His Wife Then Died | History | Atlas Obscura
Tolstoy left behind a letter addressed to his wife, in which he wrote: “Do not seek me. I feel that I must retire from the trouble of life. Perpetual guests, perpetual visits and visitors, perpetual cinematograph operators, beset me at Yasnaya Polyana, and poison my life. I want to recover from the trouble of the world. It is necessary for my soul and my body which have lived 82 years upon this earth.”
