This past week I was the director for our chuch vacation Bible school (VBS) program.
I will be honest. It is a job I never wanted and wouldn’t have taken if I had known it was part of the committee I agreed to be on. But, I decided that my attitude needed to be ‘get r done’ and not ‘woe is me’.
It turned out to be a very good week. We had way more kids sign up than we expected – there were even 10 that signed up on the first day. There were over 40 volunteers that steppped up to help and another 30+ that donated food.
It got to be a long night for some of the little ones. One boy entertained himself by pulling the fire alarm. One girl simply sat down at one point and started to cry because she was tired. Our preschool team leader recruited a small army to help keep track of all the littles and make sure everyone was accounted for at all times.
One thing that especially struck me was that the older kids (who could walk or ride their bikes/skateboards) kept arriving earlier and earlier every day. VBS started at 5:00. The first night, some showed up 10-15 minutes early. The next night they showed up 20 minutes early. The third and fourth nights, they were there 30 minutes early! I hastily created a slide show of the pictures we had taken to keep them entertained while they waited for the start.
It was good to be all together again and to have a building buzzing with energy and shared purpose. We are fortunate to be in an area where COVID seems to be at arm’s length for the moment. It felt a bit like ‘normal’ again.
Back to the purpose of Corn Nation…football is almost back! The Big Ten Media Days are coming up soon and the Huskers chosen to represent Nebraska were announced. I’m sure there are some wondering why Adrian Martinez isn’t going, but I’m not concerned. My assumption is that he has a class or something else going on that is hard to get out of. The three Huskers chosen are all top-notch leaders and will represent the program well.
