Frost talks recruiting, quarterbacks, spring game in Wednesday teleconference

Scott Frost mentioned before the start of spring football that he’s hesitant to have official visitors on campus for the April 21 spring game.

Nebraska’s head coach reiterated that stance during Wednesday’s Big Ten Teleconference.

“We’re not going to be real fired up about using official visits in the spring,” Frost said. “I think there are some situations where kids are going to want to commit early, and we’re going to have to think about using them, but I want kids to be able to come and experience what a game is like here. There’s very few game day experiences like we have in Lincoln. I think it’s a great time for kids come visit us.”

The Huskers have four commits in their 2019 recruiting class with the addition of three-star running back Thomas Grayson this week, but Frost is in no hurry to add more.

At least, for now.

“I’m also personally not crazy about getting too many kids committed in May or June,” Frost said, “because, you have to hold on to them for a long time. When a kid commits here, I want it to be final. I want them to be done looking.”

While there may not be official visitors at Memorial Stadium for the Spring Game, numerous unofficial visitors, along with 90,000 spectators will be on hand to watch the annual Red-White Scrimmage on April 21st.

Frost said he’s not surprised that the stadium is sold out for the event.

“That’s one of the things that makes Nebraska special,” he said. “We’re going to have a sell out for our spring game just like we’ve had for every game since 1962 in this stadium. You won’t find fan support like that anywhere.”

With the spring game inching closer, fans have been hoping to get a glimpse as to who Nebraska’s next starting quarterback will be. Frost reiterated Wednesday that a decision is still some time away.

“Everybody has Xs and Os to learn,” Frost said. “I suppose quarterback probably is the hardest, just because they have so much to manage. They probably have to know more things than everybody else, and sometimes, offense and quarterback in particular takes a little longer to come around than some other positions or maybe defense.”

Frost hasn’t been vocal about any favorite at QB, but he has been vocal about his stance on transfer rules in college football. The NCAA is considering allowing players to transfer schools without having to sit out if they hit a certain GPA requirement.

Frost expressed support in letting players have more rights, but he’s against this transfer rule.

“I think it’s going to open up a can of worms people don’t even expect,” he said. “If kids are able to transfer without penalty, I wouldn’t put it past a lot of schools to have agents and recruiters on other schools’ campuses recruiting their players.

“I’m all for player freedom and giving them more ability to do what they want to do in their lives, but I think there are a lot of problems that would be opened up with that rule that people probably aren’t thinking about.”
