Frost Taking Bethune-Cookman Seriously, Martinez Wins Manning Award

Scott Frost didn’t linger for long after practice at the Hawks Championship Center. His press conference probably lasted less than three minutes, but it was enough time to get his message across – Nebraska isn’t going to take Bethune-Cookman lightly. Or so they say.

Frost is obligated to say something along those lines. As Frost has learned this season, even the most anodyne statements can be taken and used as bulletin board material.

Frost said in the lead up to the Husker’s clash against the Purdue Boilermakers that it was a “winnable game.” Of course the Huskers went on to lose the game 42-28. After the final whistle as Frost was shaking hands with Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm, Boilermaker’s running back Markell Jones mocked Frost, shouting “you had a winnable game” as he passed him. Lesson learned.

This week, Frost is being especially careful, even refusing to commit to saying if any of the young players or other backups will be seeing playing time Saturday. Frost simply said that Nebraska “had to make sure we’re going to win the game first,” before making that determination.

If Adrian Martinez has anything to do with it, the Huskers might have the game wrapped up by halftime. The true freshman was handed another award this week, taking home the “Manning Award Quarterback of the Week” Thursday.

Martinez went 25-20 for 276 passing yards and four total touchdowns for Nebraska’s win against Minnesota. If the Huskers can pick up steam and get up big early, the starters will be able to get some much needed rest, as they have had to forgo their bye-week.

Nebraska takes on Bethune-Cookman this Saturday for an 11 A.M. kickoff. Bethune-Cookman is an FCS team that comes from the MEAC conference. They’re 4-4 on the season.
