Yesterday morning our fearless leader at Corn Nation, Jon Johnston, published a flakes with the following headline: Beat Purdue or Forget This Season. Give it a read.
I disagree, wholeheartedly.
While beating Purdue is probably required in order for Nebraska to get to a bowl game, it does not therefore follow that the season is lost if the Huskers lose.
To be clear, I am in no way predicting the following, but what if Nebraska finds a way to beat Wisconsin and/or Iowa to finish out the season?
Iowa has beaten Nebraska six straight times and Wisconsin has beaten the Huskers seven straight times. Brutal stuff.
What if Nebraska knocks them both down and finishes the season at 5-7? Or even just one of them and finishes 4-8. Does that make it a lost season? Beating a team for the first time in six or seven seasons means something to me.
In gauging whether it is a lost season I think we need to remind ourselves that Nebraska lost to (currently) #4 ranked Oklahoma by seven points. Lost to #6 ranked Michigan by three points. Lost to #8 ranked Michigan State by three points in overtime.
“But they lost,” you might say. “Frost continues to lose one score games, and that’s coaching.” It’s also coaching that he’s been in these games at all.
I am just as disgruntled and disillusioned as the next fan. Last week I was in a dark dark dark place as a Nebraska football fan. I started writing an article that I could only describe as bleak. I ended up throwing it in the proverbial trash can and moved on.
I am in the same camp as Sam McKewon, unless he has changed his mind since, as I also believe this is a two year process for deciding whether Frost is the right guy.
A loss to Purdue does not result in a lost season. A win against Purdue does not demonstrate the opposite. We have to look at the season as a whole and we aren’t to the end yet.
If this does end up being a lost season it won’t be because the Huskers lost to Purdue. It will be because Nebraska lost to Illinois and Minnesota.
Be Curious. Not Judgmental.
