I think when Tristan Alvano signed on the bottom line of his letter of intent that most of us expected him to be the kicker for the next four years. He started as a true freshman and connect on 9 of 15 field goals and made all 27 of his PAT attempts.
Remember when the PAT kind of felt like a coin flip a few years ago?
Well the injury bug and a new addition to the roster in John Hohl has made things interesting at the kicker position for the Huskers.
Here’s John Hohl’s bio from Huskers.com:
John Hohl redshirted in his lone season at Iowa Western in 2023 before transferring to Nebraska. Ranked as the top transfer kicker at a Kohl’s Kicking showcase in the spring of 2024, Hohl chose to join the Huskers after also receiving interest from Coastal Carolina.
At Lincoln Southwest High School, Hohl saw action at both place-kicker and punter. In his senior season, Hohl made all three of his field goal attempts and was a perfect 18-of-18 on extra points.
Ed Foley, special teams coach, and Rhule have both mentioned that it is a battle between Alvano and Hohl.
Here’s hoping the best man wins and I do have to say that it is nice knowing Nebraska has more than one kicker when we have had seasons when there was no kicker at all.
No Alternate Jersey – Thankfully
Coach Rhule was on the radio on Wednesday night and said that he is more of a traditionalist and it is more of a philosophical decision on why there will be no alternate jerseys this year.
He said on the radio that “if our players had their druthers they would definitely, I know every recruit, every player would come out in white on white or red on red for one game. But in terms of an alternate uniform, there is nothing this year.”
I am completely thankful for this because over the past decade Nebraska has to have some of the worst alternate uniforms in the entire country.
Part of me thinks that it is because they have been trying to walk the line between trying to be creative but at the same time trying to not go too far away from the usual uniform people are comfortable with. There have been some alternates that you cannot even tell are alternates unless you look at them under a magnifying glass.
Until they are willing to go outside their comfort zone then I think they should just saw away from alternate uniforms.
