Friday Flakes: My Outside the Box Nebraska Football Prediction for 2024 Revolves Around Jalyn Gramstad Husker Matt Rhule Dylan Raiola

We are inching ever so close to the start of the 2024 Nebraska football season. I’ll put out some of my usual pre-season articles but I thought a fun one for flakes would be my outside-of-the-box prediction for the 2024 season.

Here it is.

Jalyn Gramstad will lead Nebraska football to wins over both Wisconsin and Iowa to finish out the season.

For those of you who don’t know — his story so far is already a great one. He started out as a defensive back at NAIA Northwestern and ended his tenure at Northwestern as the top NAIA player in the country at the quarterback position. He won a national championship in 2022 and was a runner-up in 2023.

Then he decided to drive to Nebraska’s post-graduate camp this past off-season and told no one except for a few people. Nebraska didn’t even know he was coming.

So this prediction would likely require that Dylan Raiola gets injured as everything indicates Raiola is the presumed starter as a true freshman. I am not hoping for this in any way. It is just a prediction as injuries happen and I think Gramstad will end up being the backup at some point.

It sounds like he doesn’t have a really strong arm but at some point winners just win and that’s what he does.

So that’s my prediction. If even half of this prediction comes to fruition then it’ll be one of the best stories involving Nebraska football in well over a decade.

Here are all the info on Gramstad from Huskers.com for your brain to consume:

Jalyn Gramstad was the top NAIA player in the country before transferring to Nebraska for his final season. Gramstad spent four years at Northwestern College in Iowa, beginning his career as a defensive back before switching to quarterback.

Gramstad led the Raiders to the NAIA national championship in 2022 and a runner-up finish in 2023. At Northwestern, Gramstad completed 438-of-647 passes (68 percent) for 6,237 yards and 60 touchdowns. He added 1,822 rushing yards with 31 touchdowns.

In 2023, Gramstad was the NAIA Player of the Year, the GPAC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American. He threw for 3,681 yards and 35 touchdowns while leading the NAIA in passing and completion percentage (67.8). Gramstad set a school record for completions (258) and ranked second in school history in passing yards and passing touchdowns. On the ground, Gramstad rushed for 772 yards and eight touchdowns.

In 2022, Gramstad had 2,511 passing yards and 1,024 rushing yards while accounting for 58 total touchdowns. He set a school record by completing 68.8 percent of his passes and threw for 25 touchdowns and rushed for 23 scores.

Gramstad spent his first two seasons at Northwestern as a defensive back. In 2021, he recorded 36 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions and one fumble recovery. He also tied for the team lead with seven pass breakups. In the 2020 Covid season, Gramstad totaled 31 tackles with two interceptions.

Gramstad played his prep ball for West Lyon High School in Iowa. A two-way player, he helped West Lyon to a state championship as a quarterback and defensive back. An all-state football player, Gramstad was also an all-conference pick in basketball, baseball and golf.

Keona Davis is quickly making a big impression at Nebraska
Since joining the Huskers as a 2024 Signing Day commitment in February, the freshman defensive lineman has done nothing but impress. A former three-star edge out of Tucson, Arizona, Davis’s rise has continued into fall camp.

So much so that he took reps with the first-team defense during Nebraska’s open practice last Saturday night.

The 3-2-1: Nebraska’s bad luck at the tackle position continues
The most recent injury to offensive lineman Teddy Prochazka is the latest of the Huskers’ bad luck at the tackle position.

In this week’s 3-2-1 column, we hit on that and more with three things we learned, two questions, and one prediction.

2024 Breakout: Isaiah Neyor
Every year a handful of players raiser their game for Nebraska and breakout by raising their games and becoming key parts of the roster. Players like Isaac Gifford, Tommi Hill and Nash Hutmacher reached new heights in 2023 and are now expected to be even better this season.

‘Forward-thinking’ Jets hold Aaron Rodgers out of rainy practice – ESPN
New York Jets coach Robert Saleh woke up Thursday morning, looked outside at the rainy weather and decided to keep quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the sideline for a joint practice with the Washington Commanders.

And Rodgers apparently wasn’t thrilled about it.

“He pushed back, he pushed back,” Saleh said after practice. “He wanted to go, but in the grand scheme of things, we’re trying to keep forward-thinking with regard to Week

Falcons wide receiver Rondale Moore to miss season after knee injury in training camp – Yahoo Sports
Rondale Moore’s debut with the Atlanta Falcons will have to wait another year.

QB Jalen Hurts reportedly got so desperate to fix 2023 Eagles that he called ex-Giants DC Wink Martindale – Yahoo Sports
The relationship between Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni and franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts was under a lot of scrutiny during the 2023 season for one very simple reason: it didn’t seem to be working. Despite getting out to a 10-1 start, the Eagles imploded late, losing five of their last six regular-season games and getting eliminated in the wild-card round of the playoffs. The stench of dysfunction was wafting off the Eagles like they’d been sprayed by a skunk.
