Fred Hoiberg’s ‘routine’ surgery; Rienk Mast, Sam Hoiberg on sidelines

Rienk Mast surveyed the court from a stationary bike near the baseline, shouting instructions and encouragement as his teammates cycled through drills on the second official day of practice.

“Get there, Brax!” he shouted as transfer center Braxton Meah hustled down the floor in transition.

Later, Andrew Morgan stepped into a 3-pointer to potentially end a shooting drill. “Game time, Andrew!” Mast yelled.

Mast is out for the year after undergoing offseason knee surgery. He’s remained involved with the team, particularly in helping new post players Meah and Morgan as they acclimate to Nebraska.

Mast has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Nov. 4 in Chicago, where he hopes to receive clearance to get back on the court as he recovers. In the meantime, he’s able to work out on the bike and in the pool.

Redshirt junior guard Sam Hoiberg is the only other Husker not currently healthy after spraining his ankle last week. The swelling has decreased in recent days, but he’ll be out for “a couple weeks,” NU coach Fred Hoiberg said.

“The good thing about Sam is he knows what he’s doing out there,” Fred Hoiberg said. “It’s not like Sam needs every rep. He plays the right way, and hopefully, we’ll have him back before we open up with games.”

Fred Hoiberg not expecting to miss time after procedure

Fred Hoiberg anticipates a “very routine” surgery when he has his pacemaker replaced Friday. He first got a pacemaker after open heart surgery in 2005 and had it exchanged for the first time in 2014.

Hoiberg said his current device has about a month of power left, and the upcoming weekend was the best time for the procedure. He’ll attend practice Friday morning before the operation, recover over the weekend and be back in the gym by Monday if all goes well.
