Tulsa, Okla. – Five Nebraska wrestlers will grapple this evening, as four Huskers earned All-American honors with victories in Friday morning’s quarterfinals.
Liam Cronin (125), Brock Hardy (141), Peyton Robb (157) and Mikey Labriola (174) all secured All-American status, while Silas Allred (197) will wrestle for the same accolade in the Round of 12.
Quarterfinals
No. 3 Cronin (125) was the first Husker to secure All-American status with a thrilling 3-1 decision in sudden victory. Cronin and No. 27 Eddie Ventresca (VT) had an escape each at the end of regulation to be tied at one. In overtime, Cronin got the takedown to win the bout and move on to tonight’s semifinals.
At 141, No. 4 Hardy, in his first NCAA Championships, earned All-America honors and a spot in the semifinals, defeating Purdue’s No. 12 Parker Filius in a 7-0 decision. Hardy tallied a takedown in all three periods and added a second-period escape to beat Filius for the second time this season.
No. 3 Robb (157) clinched his third-career All-American finish with a victory over No. 6 Daniel Cardenas (STAN). Robb tallied a pair of takedowns in the first period to hold the 4-1 advantage. With two near-fall points in the second period, Cardenas made it a one-point match. Robb answered with an escape and the riding time point to win the bout, 6-4.
At 174, No. 2 Labriola became the first five-time All-American in program history, defeating No. 7 Peyton Mocco (MIZ) in a 4-3 decision. Labriola used a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal to go up 4-2 and only allowed an escape in the final two minutes to move on to the semifinals.
No. 8 Allred (197) battled top-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi (PITT), but fell in a decision. It was a one-point match in the final period, but Bonaccorsi had a late escape to win, 5-3.
Consolation
At 165, No. 25 Bubba Wilson made it to the third round of consolations after a 5-2 win over No. 23 Connor Brady (VT) in the second round. The bout was tied at 1 in the third period, but Wilson pulled away with two takedowns to earn the decision. In the third round, Wilson battled UNI’s No. 17 Austin Yant and fell in a 10-0 major decision to be eliminated. He wraps up the season 17-15 and 5-6 in duals.
No. 13 Lenny Pinto (184) was pinned by No. 14 Will Feldkamp (CLAR) in the second period and was eliminated. He finishes the season 25-12 and 10-3 in dual competition.
