I am all over the board this morning.

Are you paying attention to news out of fall camp?

This time of year is hard because this is the same stuff we’ve heard from the Frost camp for a few years now. It’s like me telling my wife I’m going to quit drinking – the same shit over and over and it doesn’t matter until something finally happens.

That’s where I’m at. It’s hard to generate content this way unless you just want to spew words. Hate to be that honest, but… there it is.

On the other hand, I could start insulting other fanbases before the football season even starts.

One thing to know. Just because Iowa has beaten us six straight times does not mean you can’t insult them. For one, what did they actually do with those six seasons? What did they accomplish?

Just because we’ve been bad lately does not mean other programs haven’t been too. It doesn’t mean insult’s don’t stick.

Here’s a story about that.

Years ago, I worked with this young man named Brian. Farm work, laying pipe, imagine that job.

Brian was slow. Granted, we were young. Most teenagers are pretty lacking in ambition. Brian was slow to get to work. Slow to get off the trailer and pick up a pipe. Slow in everything damned thing he did.

At one point, it really pissed me off because I wanted to finish.

This got his attention. I mean, REALLY got his attention. This is what I wanted, just to see if I could get a rise out of him.

“I’m NOT slow.”

“You are slow in everything. You walk slow, you move slow, you talk slow, on top of that, you’re a fucking idiot.”

DING! DING! DING!

Brian DID NOT like being called an idiot. He suddenly became more awake, more alive than I’d ever seen him. He raised his hands.

“You’re an asshole.”

And here’s the money shot.

“You’re right. I’m an asshole. But you’re still slow.”

And at that point, Brian started toward me, fists raised. I raised my hands and told him I didn’t want to fight him, mostly because I’m not a fighter and there’s something about fighting a guy after you’ve hit his sweet anger spot.

Another co-worker stepped in front of him and started calming him down. Brian moved faster after that, but he did not like me much.

Here’s the deal with that exchange. Both statements were true.

I AM AN ASSHOLE AND BRIAN IS SLOW.

How does this translate?

Iowa has beaten Nebraska six times in a row. Nebraska sucks.

Iowa did almost nothing during those six seasons. Did they win any championships? In anything? They are an average, mediocre athletic department in every sport with the exception of wrestling. Worse yet, they don’t even DREAM BIG. They are losers.

Both statements are true.

Nebraska sucks. Iowa sucks more overall because they don’t even try to be great.

And that’s how you get over being bothered by this idea of “We can’t insult them when they’re always beating us.”

Is this shocking? I’m finding it hard to watch when I already know the results. I enjoy the Olympics. It’s a bunch of sports, nations, and stories about which I only care about every four years.

But if you already know the outcome when you get up in the morning, check your email, check twitter, it’s unavoidable.

Yes, it matters. It doesn’t translate directly into wins, but knowing that we’re finally getting players to the point the NFL has more than just a passing interest is key to building a better program, especially on defense.

The other key? Finding and getting more into the pipeline.
