Flakes: Hoping For A Really Good Day, A Kevin Warren Interview, And College Word Series At Capacity!

Last week I discovered I may have a blood clot in my heart. Today, probably as you read this, I will be undergoing a cardiac MRI to discover more information. I have no idea what any of this will mean for the future. It could be nothing. It could be something pretty bad, although I’m guessing if it were urgently bad, they would have done something already.

Perhaps if there’s one good thing – I say my prayers more urgently each night when I to go to bed. Then I say, “Come on, God, I have to see how all this with Scott Frost turns out.” I don’t have great bargaining chips anymore because I’ve quit drinking and barely go anywhere I could get in trouble.

I get to lay in an MRI machine for an hour this morning. I pray it turns out well.

Nebraska Recruiting: One Less Option at Running Back for Huskers Creates Good Pressure – Nebraska Football Recruiting | Hail Varsity
Things change quickly in college football though. The room is wide open following the departure of Dedrick Mills. Even though the starting role is up for grabs, the position is very crowded. Gabe Ervin, Marvin Scott, Sevion Morrison, Markese Stepp, Jaquez Yant and Rahmir Johnson are all still in Lincoln. They all know that running backs coach Ryan Held is looking for someone to step up over the summer.

He’s lost weight, added strength to his arm, outlasted his toughest challenger and, according to his coach, found peace with being QB1 in the Nebraska football fishbowl.

Adrian Martinez is poised, Husker coaches and teammates agree, for a big season as NU’s fourth-year starter.

College World Series in Omaha will be at 100% capacity | Baseball | omaha.com
The policy change is a massive financial upgrade for Omaha, which in typical years sees an economic boost of roughly $88 million as visitors from around the country fill hotels, restaurants and TD Ameritrade Park for the College World Series. The 2019 CWS saw a total attendance of 332,054, only a couple years after the 2017 version brought in 357,646 — the highest figure in the 70-plus year history of the event.

COVID, cancellations, calls for social justice: Kevin Warren’s early experiences as Big Ten commish went beyond sports | Sporting News

It only took 17 months for Kevin Warren to become one of the longest tenured power five conference commissioners. That’s how much turnover there has been in that position of late. They were 17 months that felt like 17 years, though.

I implore you to read this.

I am trying to give Kevin Warren the benefit of the doubt. It was a tough year on everyone.

Kevin does his best to tout the positive he’s done during his reign as commissioner, and it sounds like he’s done some good things, but let’s be honest. This interview could have been done by a high school kid who’s wondering if he wants to get into journalism.

This interview is fluff. It is goo. It presents zero challenge. If this is how Warren is going to communicate, he shouldn’t be shocked when he’s boo’ed at every venue at which he appears unless he’s handing out trophies.

I am wrong about this perspective? Should we give Warren more room, more grace, more forgiveness, or is this interview really the piece of shit I think it is?

There is plenty of talent with this position group, but who is the cream of the crop?

Are transfer quarterbacks the new way forward for Northwestern? – Inside NU
Peyton Ramsey found the perfect place at the perfect time. A football program with an established, winning tradition in the 21st century, coming off a season during which they produced arguably the worst non-triple option passing offense on this side of the millennia. Northwestern was angry, full of seniors along both sides of the ball and eager to prove they were more like the 2018 Big Ten West championship team than the 2019 squad that was conference fodder.

The Scarlet Knights have plenty of options along their line moving forward.

How Mel Tucker rebuilt Michigan State’s defense using the transfer portal – The Only Colors
Tucker and his staff identified team needs, and used the transfer portal to bolster those positions and transform the overall roster. The defense, particularly in the back seven with the linebackers and defensive backs, could see the most immediate impact.

2021 college football coach rankings: ACC, SEC leaders undergo shifts among Power Five coaches ranked 65-26 – CBSSports.com
Scott Frost: Only two coaches fell further in this year’s rankings than Frost, and the 13 spots he drops this season are tacked onto the nine he fell last year. That’s 22 spots in two years for a coach widely viewed as a “no-doubt, home-run hire” at Nebraska. Well, he’s 12-20 in three seasons with the Cornhuskers, and that 13-0 season at UCF just seems further away with every loss. 2020 rank: 34 (-13)

Try This One Weird Trick Russian Hackers Hate – Krebs on Security
KrebsOnSecurity noted that virtually all ransomware strains have a built-in failsafe designed to cover the backsides of the malware purveyors: They simply will not install on a Microsoft Windows computer that already has one of many types of virtual keyboards installed — such as Russian or Ukrainian. So many readers had questions in response to the tweet that I thought it was worth a blog post exploring this one weird cyber defense trick.

Waymo self-driving robotaxi goes rogue with passenger inside, escapes support staff • The Register
Addressing the support operator, Johnson said of the planned route displayed on-screen in the car, “I don’t know if you can see the planner, but it wants to go halfway between lanes, like right over the cones.”

Eventually, Roadside Assistance pulls up behind the stopped Waymo. The car then decides to depart before Waymo’s driver can take manual control, only to again get stuck amid the cones.

“You better hurry up, it’s gonna escape,” Johnson remarked.

“The car took off again?” the operator said.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes,” said Johnson as the car’s steering wheel turns on its own. “Uh well, a little bit, and then it … this is, um. Now it’s … I don’t even know what’s going on anymore.”

Youtube Shorts are short videos of less than a minute, ala Instagram and Tiktok. I haven’t tried TikTok, and I truly suck at Instagram. Youtube…. I think I can make it work.

Subscribe to our channel, dammit.

I am open to ideas on what to do with it.

Our dog Esther is struggling with two torn ACLs. She’s not her energetic half-Lab self. She struggles with walking sometimes, and cannot get up the stairs without help. She has to be helped up on our beds or the couch if she wants to be close. She can’t go on the two mile walks with me, and she’s been a constant companion since my heart attack in 2015.

She won’t have surgery until July 19th because that’s how far behind things are.

This really sucks.
