Five Reasons Nebraska Will Win: Northwestern

On Saturday one team is getting their third victory and first Big Ten win of the season.

That team is going to be the Huskers. I’ve got no doubt about it.

Here are my reasons:

This will probably be a reason every game this season. The Blackshirts defense has been playing lights out lately and I don’t see them letting up. I’m sure you’ve heard that stats, but I’ll let you know again. The Huskers D didn’t let Michigan State get a single first down in the 2nd half last weekend. They held the potent rushing offense to only 14 yards in the half too. I expect to see them to continue to get better and play at a level that can will Nebraska to a win.

Look for Northwestern being shut down like this on Saturday.

This reason is also going to be on repeat frequently this year. I know there are people who may disagree and that’s fine. I still believe that Martinez is playing his best football yet and doing all he can to put this team in a position to win games. He’s ranked 4th in the country in completion percentage with 71.5%. He has averaged 324.6 yards per game and has had at least 250 yards of total offense in each of this past six games.

This game has a history of coming down to the wire. In the series history neither team has a long streak of wins. Nebraska holds the series wins at 8 to Northwestern’s 6. In Lincoln Nebraska leads 4-3. Last year Northwestern won, so this year it will be Nebraska. It’s simple science…and math too.

Northwestern has the worst rushing defense in the Big Ten. While Nebraska has not shown a solid rushing attack yet this season, they do have some running backs that can push the Wildcats to the limit.

This is the game that the Huskers capitalize on a weak rushing D and we get to see what these running backs can do. Ramir Johnson is going to break free on a few plays and we’ll finally get to spot the speed that we’ve hear so much about.

I know that I used this term incorrectly the last time I used it. (See 5 to Win: Oklahoma), but I kind of just do what I want and this time I’m using it right. The Huskers have had to close games that should’ve bee wins in two straight games. That’s not going to happen this time. The Huskers are finally ready to go in and dominate the game. We’re so lucky that we’ll get to watch a “battle of the NUs” that isn’t going to have you on the edge of your seat until the very last second.
