Thanks to senior righty Nate Fisher, the Huskers beat No. 21 Baylor 2-0 in Waco on Saturday, securing the series win after beating the Bears 12-4 on Friday.

Although Fisher couldn’t go the distance, his fantastic performance from the mound can’t be overstated. He did not allow a single hit in 8 innings pitched.

Following the game, Husker head coach Darin Erstad said on the Husker Sports Network that Fisher’s performance was “as good as I’ve ever seen him pitch in four plus years here… Boy, if he can repeat that, look out.”

The game was quiet through the first three innings, but in the fourth, the stalemate was broken on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luke Roskam to score Colby Gomes to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.

Fisher had a perfect game going until the bottom of the sixth, when a walk and an error allowed the Bears to get two base runners on. However, the Huskers would get out of the inning unscathed, preserving their 1-0 lead.

In the next frame, Nebraska loaded the bases on Baylor with one out for some possible insurance runs, but the Bears were able to bail themselves out. Luke Roskam tripped over his feet on his way over to third after Joe Acker hit a looping single into left center field. Then the next two Husker batters were retired to end Nebraska’s threat in the inning.

NU was able to add a run in the top of the ninth, after Spencer Schwellenbach hit a single into shallow center field to make it 2-0.

Fisher needed just three more outs to complete his no hit bid, however he threw a pitch into the dirt just before he plunked the leadoff batter, his second hit by pitch of the day. Head coach Darin Erstad made the call to the bullpen right after that, ending his afternoon. On the day, Fisher allowed just four base runners on no hits, one walk, and one error.

Fisher’s replacement, Robbie Palkert, retired the next batter but gave up a two out single to Baylor’s Davis Wendzel. Palkert was pulled in favor of Nebraska’s designated hitter Gomes, who got the save against No. 3 Texas Tech last Friday. Gomes got the last batter to fly out to seal the win for the Huskers.

Nebraska will be back at the ball park on Sunday, where they’ll be looking for the series sweep. Sophomore left hander Connor Curry will be getting the start.

“Connor just had the blueprint laid out for him,” Erstad said. “He can have success like Nate did.”

Nebraska is now 6-6 on the season.
