Final Push Not Enough For Nebraska in Loss at Rutgers

A season high in three-pointers and a flurry in the final minute weren’t enough for Nebraska(13-3, 3-2) Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers got off to a strong start, taking advantage of a trio of triples to jump out to an 11-2 lead. Rutgers(14-2, 4-1 Big Ten) stormed back with an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Both teams used runs but the game stayed close with the Scarlet Knights leading 35-32 at the half.

The scoring runs continued in the second half with Rutgers taking a 15 point lead at 59-44 thanks to an 11-2 run. Nebraska used back-to-back threes from Leigha Brown and Ashtyn Veerbeek as part of an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 59-55. The Scarlet Knights scored the next seven points to set up a furious final minute.

Brown made a pair of free throws and Nicea Eliely got a layup while Rutgers missed four straight free throws. After the Scarlet Knights made a pair from the line, Hannah Whitish made a free throw and hit a three-pointer in a span of eight seconds to cut the deficit to five points.

Rutgers would make one more free throw and a late Isabelle Bourne layup weren’t enough as Nebraska fell 69-65.

The Huskers made a season high 12 three-pointers while shooting 50-percent from deep and 39.7-percent from the floor.

Veerbeek made four triples to lead Nebraska in scoring with 14 points. Whitish added 10 points while Eliely, Brown, and Bourne each pitched in nine.

The Huskers continue on the road January 16 at No. 17 Maryland(12-4, 3-2 Big Ten).
