Dylan Raiola, Nebraska quarterbacks talk fall camp battle

Nebraska quarterbacks Dylan Raiola, Daniel Kaelin, and Heinrich Haarberg are interviewed by a Big Ten sideline reporter following the Red-White Spring Game on April 27 at Memorial Stadium.

For much of Glenn Thomas’ chat with beat reporters, the Nebraska quarterbacks coach offered little difference between Dylan Raiola, Heinrich Haarberg and Daniel Kaelin, the top three guys in training camp.

Near the end of 12 minutes, though, Thomas noted Raiola, the five-star freshman, has an “aura” that elicits a good response.

“There’s a confidence you hear in tone of voice and being vocal — if somebody runs the wrong route, you let ’em know,” Thomas said Friday before the three QBs talked formally to the media. “Just the confidence of a protection call. Or, let’s challenge (center) Ben Scott on a call. ‘Hey, this is what I see, I want to do this.’ The conviction of making those calls, that only comes with confidence. So if you’re second-guessing yourself, everybody else is going to feel that.”

The more and more Raiola and his teammates are “in this,” Thomas said, the more confident they’ll get. Thomas’ assessment of their play, he said, is daily and has already begun.

Thomas is looking at completion rate, a lack of mental errors and lack of turnovers as key criteria. Nebraska had 31 turnovers in 2023, so ball security looms as a factor in the quarterback race.

Other quick hits from the media chat:

Five quarterbacks on Husker roster

Nebraska has five quarterbacks among its 120-man roster: Raiola, Haarberg, Kaelin, Jalyn Gramstad and Blair walk-on Bode Soukup.

Gramstad, a former NAIA All-American, has “credibility” with current Husker quarterbacks because of his success in winning a national championship at Northwestern (Iowa). Thomas compared Gramstad to current NU receivers coach Garret McGuire, who was once a quarterback at Baylor under Thomas.

“He’s got a great personality, great character, he’s humble,” Thomas said of Gramstad. “He just wants to help and fit in in any way he can, he wants to be a coach, so he has that unique perspective of learning the big picture, which I appreciate.”

QBs working with outside coaches

Thomas said he has no objection to any of his quarterbacks working with outside coaches.

Former NU quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco generally forbade it because he didn’t want his QBs learning bad habits.

The ‘fine line’ for quarterbacks

There’s a “fine line,” Thomas said, between wanting his players to avoid risky decisions without “taking their stinger away” to make big plays.

“We do have some guys who do have some arm talent, for sure,” Thomas said.

Offensive linemen back from injuries

Offensive line coach Donovan Raiola also spoke Friday. Turner Corcoran and Teddy Prochazka enter camp competing for playing time along the offensive line. Corcoran missed the end of 2023 with a foot injury. Prochazka has dealt with various ailments throughout his college career but stayed relatively healthy a season ago.

Through their injuries, both managed to stay engaged within the unit. Donovan Raiola encourages players to speak up and coach each other even while inactive, and Corcoran and Prochazka have become close, training together.

“It’s like they’re best friends,” Donovan Raiola said. “Usually you’re competing, you’re competing and you’re trying to — I don’t know. But those guys, they were together every day and they push each other and help each other.”
