Do Rhule, Deion Sanders have legitimate beef?

Welcome to the Hot Topic, a weekly feature that poses a key question about the Nebraska football team. On the “Life in the Red Podcast,” Luke Mullin and Amie Just will discuss a topic heading into that week’s game, and a transcription of the conversation will appear in the Journal Star’s Huskers section before gameday.

Do Matt Rhule, Deion Sanders have legitimate beef?

Amie: They’re two very different people, and some people are going to agree with how Matt Rhule does things and some people are going to agree with how Deion Sanders does things. As of right now, neither is right nor wrong because neither made a bowl last year. So I guess we have to wait and see from that perspective of, ‘Who is right?’

I don’t think so, I think it’s kind of inflated a little bit by the fanbases; some people read into things more than they should. I think a better question is, does Shedeur Sanders have beef with Matt Rhule? Because I think the answer to that question is yes.

People are also reading…

They’re just two guys who want to see their teams succeed and they’re building their rosters in different ways and they’re going about it in different ways, and as of right now, neither is right nor wrong. But what would it accomplish if either one of them came out and said, ‘Screw this guy or screw that guy?’ What would that do?

Luke: ESPN would love it.

Amie: Sure, I guess, but it’s just like, ‘Nah.’

Luke: They’ve both handled the spotlight well this week. They’re both competitors, and that was something that maybe kicked off the initial feelings last year. They just want to beat each other, they want to be better than each other and it doesn’t matter who the coach is, why, etc.

But everything that Shedeur (Sanders) had to say in the postgame about, ‘Oh, Nebraska’s disrespecting them, huddling on the 50-yard line, on the logo,’ saying he was disrespecting Deion Sanders, that certainly didn’t help things, those public comments.

I will give all the credit in the world to Deion for the way that he did handle that during his press conference this week. He was complimentary of Matt Rhule, saying, ‘Hey, they’re building there too, wish them the best.’

I did think that was good from both coaches, yes they had that animosity or brief flareup last year, but both of them threw cold water on that this week and said, ‘We’re just trying to win a football game.’
