Nebraska great Tony Davis will join the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame this weekend, as the former Husker running back is part of the bowl’s fourth class of inductees. This year’s class will be added as part of the festivities surrounding the 88th Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Davis was the Most Valuable Player of the 1974 Sugar Bowl, helping Coach Tom Osborne’s Huskers to a 13-10 victory over Florida. Davis rushed for 126 yards on 17 carries against the Gators, including 11 times for 110 yards in the final 20 minutes, as Nebraska rallied for a 10-0 deficit. Davis had a 40-yard run with just over three minutes to play to set up Mike Coyle’s game-winning 39-yard field goal.

The Sugar Bowl MVP honor was part of an outstanding Nebraska career for Davis. The Tecumseh, Neb., native was Osborne’s first 1,000-yard rusher as a sophomore in 1973 and finished his career as Nebraska’s then all-time leading rusher with 2,445 yards. “Tough Tony” was a standout in the postseason as he also earned MVP honors in the 1974 Cotton Bowl win over Texas.

Davis went on to play six seasons in the National Football League, appearing in 89 career games with the Bengals and Buccaneers.

Davis is the first Nebraska player in the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame. The Huskers have appeared in four Sugar Bowl games, posting a 3-1 record.
