Cain named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the fourth time

Nebraska freshman center Kate Cain captured her fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor on Monday.

A 6-5 true freshman from Middletown, N.Y., Cain led the Huskers in an 86-69 win over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 19 with a career-high 22 points, 14 rebounds and a school record 11 blocks. It was the first triple-double in school history with points, rebounds and blocks.

It was only the third triple-double in NU women’s basketball history.

Cain also blocked three shots in Friday’s 73-61 loss to Washington State. She now has 50 blocks on the season, and needs only four more to tie NU’s freshman single season record held by Janet Smith, who had 54 blocks in the 1978-79 season.

This season, Cain is averaging 11.2 points, a team-best 7.7 rebounds and a team-best 3.8 blocks per game for the 9-4 Huskers, who have already surpassed their win total from last season.

Nebraska opens Big Ten regular-season play at home against No. 11 Ohio State on Thursday. Tip-off from Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 7 p.m. The game will be carried on 107.3 FM and will also be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
