Billie Andrews Named Freshman of the Week

Nebraska shortstop Billie Andrews was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, marking the second straight week she was selected as the conference’s top freshman.

Andrews is just the second Husker to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in consecutive weeks, joining All-American MJ Knighten, who took home the honor in the first two weeks of April in the 2014 season.

A native of Gretna, Neb., Andrews went 7-for-14 in the four-game series at Rutgers with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and four runs scored. She was 4-for-5 in the series opener, becoming the first Husker freshman with a four-hit game since 2011. Andrews also hit her second career home run in the series finale. She had at least one hit and scored at least one run in every game of the series, extending her streak to nine consecutive games with both a hit and run scored.

Andrews has started every game at shortstop this spring and is batting .338. She leads Nebraska in hits (23), runs (16), RBIs (15) and stolen bases (8). Among all Big Ten players, Andrews ranks second in the conference in triples, fourth in runs and RBIs and sixth in steals.
