B1G Preview: Husker Wrestlers Set for 2023 Big Ten Championships



The Nebraska wrestling teams begins its preseason push this weekend as it travels to Michigan for the 2023 Big Ten Championships. The two-day events kicks off on Saturday, March 4 at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor.

Session I starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Session II consolation matches begin at 4:30 p.m. with semifinal matches beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Wrestling continues on Sunday at noon with consolation rounds. Championship coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. All times are in central.

The Huskers (12-3, 7-1 Big Ten) have five wrestlers seeded third or higher in their conference championship lineup. After wrapping up an undefeated regular season, Peyton Robb grabbed the top spot at 157. Mikey Labriola (174) who is also undefeated on the year, along with Liam Cronin (125) and Silas Allred (197) join Robb in the top two. Making their Big Ten Championship debuts, Brock Hardy (141) is third in the seeding, while Lenny Pinto (184) is seventh. Rounding out the top-seeded group is Bubba Wilson (165) in 10th.

Dayne Morton (149) received an 11th-place seed, two-time NCAA qualifier Kyle Burwick (133) is 12th and Austin Emerson (285) is 14th.

Last time out: Behind a pin and two technical falls, NU defeated Arizona State 25-15 on Senior Day in front of 2,684 fans at the Devaney Center.

 

Up next: NU has two weeks to prep for the 2023 NCAA Championships which are set for March 16-18 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Quick Notes:

  • Nebraska won its fifth Cliff Keen Invite team title in program history on December 3.
  • With this season’s win over Wisconsin on Jan. 29, Coach Manning picked up its 300th career victory.
  • Robb earns the tops seed at 157 pounds for the first time. He is the just the second one-seed at the Big Ten Championships since Robert Kokesh was seeded first at 174 pounds for the 2015 Big Ten Championships.
  • Both Robb and Labriola finished the regular season undefeated, marking just the first time two wrestlers have done this since 1961.

Eight Huskers Ranked in Second NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings
The NCAA released the second coaches’ panel rankings for the 2022-23 wrestling season on February 9. The final rankings will be one of the criteria used as part of the selection process to determine qualifiers and seeding for the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.

The rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, EIWA, MAC, Pac-12 and SoCon).
