Auburn had the most Nebraska-esque loss vs. Alabama tonight.

Auburn was ahead of Alabama by 4 points late in the fourth quarter and forced Alabama to punt. Auburn then muffs the punt and Alabama takes over, but still needs a touchdown to win. After a few back and forth plays on the drive, Auburn forces a long 4th and goal (at the 31) for Alabama. The Tide get a clutch TD throw and go up 27-24. Then after a comedy of errors including a bad kickoff return, sacks/fumbles backwards close to Auburn’s own end zone, and an interception on the final play (which was nearly a pick 6, not that it mattered) Auburn finally choked.

The point of this isn’t that Auburn lost like we always do. It’s that these losses are a common feature of poorly coached teams. Nebraska is not cursed, we have just had shitty coaching for almost a decade now. Bad coaching effects players, the undiscipline causes frequent turnovers, and bad coaching leads to bad playcalling/decisions during games that lead to losses. Auburn had everything going for them at the end of that game but lost because their coaches didn’t know how to win it.
