As 2024 receiver class grows, Nebraska football makes Top 3 for Jacory Barney

After getting commits last week from Bellevue West’s Dae’vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris, Nebraska football has hit a hot stretch of receiver recruiting that’s likely to extend into this week and potentially early July.

The Huskers await answers from three targets who took June official visits, including one who has his announcement date set for Saturday.

That’s Miami Palmetto wideout Jacory Barney who on Monday announced a top three of Nebraska, Miami (Fla.) and Texas A&M. He visited NU on June 2 and is just coming off his official visit to Miami. The 6-foot, 160-pound four-star prospect played receiver and Wildcat quarterback for his high school team.

Two more — three-star Quinn Clark and four-star Ernest Campbell — visited Nebraska last weekend as part of a large group that included Hall and McMorris.

“10 out of 10,” Campbell said of his visit. The 5-foot-8, 160-pounder out of Refugio, Texas, is one of the fastest recruits in the nation, running a 10.22-second 100 meters and 20.92 200 meters during his most recent track season. It’s why his top schools — Nebraska, Oregon, Texas A&M and Texas Tech among them — are allowing him to compete in both football and track. At NU, Campbell’s friend, 2023 receiver signee Brice Turner, will run and play football, too.

Like Hall and McMorris, Campbell is high on NU receivers coach Garret McGuire, the young-but-vibrant 24-year-old with his first major college job.

“Most of the time when you come in on these OVs, they just tell you what you want to hear and try to sweet-talk you, but he tells you what you need to work on,” Campbell said of McGuire.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Clark — who plays for Bozeman (Mont.) Gallatin High School — is the son of late Husker and Omaha Bryan legend Ken Clark. NU, Montana and Montana State are his top three schools.

If Nebraska gets two of those three, it’ll have four committed receivers in the class. NU also has Liberty (Mo.) North tight end Keelan Smith — who effectively plays receiver for his team — and continues to pursue Ainsworth tight end Carter Nelson who, at 6-4, 205, functions like a receiver for his Eight-Man team. Nelson is set to announce on Wednesday at noon.
