Anyone recall why no QB commits in 1993 and 1994 (perahps more than just “we had Tommie” unless that drove both years)?

As a disclaimer, and it may be the old history major in me (that degree I’ve never really used has to serve some purpose right?), I am genuinely curious about most everything that has happened with Nebraska football (my fandom dating back to the early 80s).  So that means I may bring up old issues/questions – it’s not just an off-season thing, but I realize non-current issues aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

This started from a Solich rabbit hole, but led me to look at Osborne, so this question is about the latter.  Going back to 1980 It looks like every year, but two, Osborne had at least one QB commit in each class.  Not all of these panned out as Husker contributors or even QBs, but they at least came in with that label.  (I don’t want to discount walk-ons, but I don’t think that position was known for walk-ons being more than depth – Travis Turner had been the most recent walk-on starter prior to Turman?)

The two years I don’t see a QB commit are back-to-back in 1993 and 1994.  I can understand 1993 to a point because we had four underclassman scholarship QBs (Frazier SO, Berringer RSO, Veland RSO, Rutz RFR).  Frazier had just spent half the season starting as a true freshman.  Though attrition is a thing and what likely led to having no upperclass scholarship QBs in the first place, so adding one here probably doesn’t hurt.

That said, not signing a QB in 1994 as well is more of a head scratcher.   Maybe it’s the same argument for 1993, but before 1994 starts Veland changes positions and Rutz transfers out.  Perhaps you can’t account for that when putting your class together, but, you enter 1994 with two scholarship QBs.  You also can’t predict that your #1 will get blood clots or that your #2 will suffer a punctured lung at some point, but you can assume that things can happen.  Even if you sign a QB in 1994, maybe they won’t be ahead of Turman at that point where you trust them to lead the team in an emergency?

I would have been in HS at the time so was aware of commitments rather than the recruiting process.

Does anyone recall why the QB scholarship gaps (unless I am just missing something)?  Did the coaches try a home run pitch with a candidate or two (McNabb is a name that I do hear), but were otherwise content with the scholarship QBs and walk-ons we had to be ok with striking out?  Obviously, it didn’t hurt the team , but just made me curious.

(I think in 1995, we ink three – transfer Frost, Frankie London, and Jeff Perino)
