An undependable kicking game is a bigger deal than you think.

Opposing teams knowing you don’t have access to an entire game mechanic is crippling. You have to spend a full drive with everyone knowing field goal range means nothing and a TD is only 6 points instead of a guaranteed 7. Never having the option to grab a practically guaranteed field goal and regroup, severely limits what a team can do.

The opponent knows you don’t have access to those points and will factor it into their strategy before the game even starts. The area of the field they can occupy and go for a 4th down conversion expands and they know they have a lot more wiggle room to get stops on defense.

Instead of taking a risk to get a 4+ point lead, an opponent will know they are fine with a 1 or 2 point lead. They will take those easier points to save wear and tear on their players and can use that saved strength later in the game when they need it.

Imagine we had those 4 missed kicking points back Saturday. We stalled 3 times in the red zone with 0 points to show for it. Going for it on the goal line was the right call, but field goals from the other 2 would have netted us the win. Instead we played crippled. The opponent knew this and used it to take the advantage.
