Nebraska swiped six stolen bases in the first and scored seven runs through the first four innings in an 8-6 win vs. Kansas State on Tuesday night at Hawks Field.
Nebraska (16-23) had eight runs on eight hits, while K-State (21-19) totaled six runs on five hits and an error.
Entering the 2022 season, six or more stolen bases by a team in a single inning had only been accomplished 14 times in NCAA Division I history, including nine teams accomplishing the feat. Prior to this season, the last time a team had six or more stolen bases in an inning was in 2004.
Nebraska finished the game with seven stolen bases on the night, marking the first time the Huskers had seven or more stolen bases in a game since eight against Northwestern in a 16-inning game on March 29, 2013.
Jackson Brockett made his second collegiate start, allowing four runs on three this and striking out three in 3.1 innings of work. CJ Hood improved to 2-0 on the year after recording the final two outs in the fourth. Mason Ornelas pitched a season-high four innings on the night and had a stretch where he retired 10 consecutive Wildcats in the fifth through eighth innings. Ornelas allowed two runs on two hits and tied a season-high with four strikeouts. Shay Schanaman appeared for one out on the mound, while Braxton Bragg pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Max Anderson led Nebraska at the plate with his fourth three-hit game of the season. Anderson went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Cam Chick, Garrett Anglim, Brice Matthews, Gabe Swansen and Core Jackson recorded one hit apiece for the Huskers. Chick and Jackson had a triple, while Matthews tallied a double.
The Huskers jumped ahead in the first with two runs on one hit and six stolen bases. Chick was hit by pitch and Everitt drew a full-count walk before the pair stole second and third to put runners in scoring position with one out. Anderson blooped an 0-1 pitch into left for a two-RBI single to record his seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
K-State tied the game at two in the third after back-to-back RBI singles through the left side by Josh Nicoloff and Dylan Phillips.
Three consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Wildcats in the fourth and an RBI fielder’s choice by Dominic Johnson had K-State out front 3-2. Justin Mitchell drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on the wild pitch and third on the fielder’s choice, while coming home on the second wild pitch of the inning to give K-State a 4-2 lead.
Nebraska responded quickly with five runs on four hits in the bottom half of the fourth to retake the lead at 7-4. Swansen began the inning with a hit by pitch on a full count before Jackson drilled a first-pitch RBI triple to the wall in right center to make it a one-run game. Jackson jogged on home after Chick lifted an RBI triple to center to tie the game at four. Nebraska took the lead for good after Anglim’s RBI groundout brought home Chick. Everitt drew a full-count walk, followed by Anderson smacking a two-run shot to left for his fifth home run of the season.
A leadoff walk and a two-run homer by Jeff Heinrich down the left field line had K-State within one run in the fifth at 7-6.
Nebraska doubled its lead to 8-6 in the sixth after Anderson reached on a throwing error by KSU and was driven home by Swansen’s RBI single to center.
Bragg took the mound in the ninth for the Huskers and retired the three batters he faced with two groundouts and a strikeout to clinch the 8-6 win for the Big Red.
Nebraska takes on Omaha tomorrow night at Hawks Field. First pitch between the Huskers and Mavericks is set for 6:32 p.m. Tomorrow night’s game will be broadcast on Nebraska Public Media with Larry Puteney, Jeff Leise and Ana Bellinghausen on the call.
