A comment from Rhule’s press conference yesterday about Michigan

I would post this in r/CFB, but I’m banned there for some post I made saying that the Big Ten Conference had a negative history with sex abuse scandals. Anyway.

Yahoo Sports reported yesterday that “The NCAA’s findings do not connect the in-person scouting and recording of opponents’ sidelines to Harbaugh, sources say, an absence of evidence essential to a potential lawsuit from the school and coach against the league.” I don’t buy this for a second, and I don’t think Head Coach Matt Rhule does either.

HCMR said a number of things about Michigan’s ongoing sign stealing scandal. I think this is the most telling, and I haven’t heard anyone talk about it. I’m going to paraphrase here a bit.

One of the journalists at the press conference said that HCMR had a large staff and asked if there was any way that a staffer could be doing things like the acts that Michigan ex-staffer Connor Stalions is accused of. HCMR said every staff member had duties at home games and that every person in a coach or analyst position would travel to away games.

I imagine that HCMR and his assistants are privvy to more information than we are with respect to Connor Stalions alleged scouting schedule, its overlap with Michgan’s home and away game schedule, and the proximity to the sites of games Stalions is alleged to have surreptitiously recorded.

I suspect that this statement to the media is a way of suggesting that there is no way that Jim Harbaugh didn’t know about a staff member going on the road to film future opponents’ games during Michigan games.
