5-star QBs playing as true freshman

There was a post a few days ago asking what was realistic for Raiola this year. I was curious just how often 5-star quarterbacks played enough to skip a 4-game redshirt recently. Looks like about 14 5-star quarterbacks played fairly significant snaps in the last decade, some quite a few, others played in most games without actually throwing that many passes (Saban didn't bother to redshirt much)

Here's who I saw from 247's list of 5-stars. Some familiar names–and some who faded after high school. Lot of variability.

  • Name, year, comp. %, TD/ INT, passer rating
  • Dante Moore, 23, 53.5%, 11 TD 9 INT — 125.6
  • Conner Weigman, 22, 55.3%, 8 TD 0 INT — 132.3
  • Cade Klubnik, 22, 61%, 2 TD 3 INT — 120.1
  • Caleb Williams, 21, 64.5%, 21 TD 4 INT — 169.6
  • Bryce Young, 20, 59.1%, 1 TD 0 INT — 133.7
  • JT Daniels, 18, 59.5%, 14 TD 10 INT — 128.6
  • Justin Fields, 18, 69.2%, 4 TD 0 INT — 173.7
  • Trevor Lawrence, 18, 65.2%, 30 TD 4 INT — 157.6
  • Tua Tagovailoa, 17, 63.6%, 11 TD 2 INT — 175.0
  • Jacob Eason, 16, 55.1%, 16 TD 8 INT — 120.2
  • Kyler Murray, 15, 59.5%, 5 TD 7 INT — 109.2
  • Josh Rosen, 15, 60.0%, 23 TD 11 INT — 134.3
  • Jarrett Stidham, 15, 68.8%, 12 TD 2 INT — 199.0
  • Kyle Allen, 61.5%, 16 TD 7 INT — 139.5

Simple average is 144, and a QB with a 144 passer rating would have been about 45th in the NCAA last year. That would also have been the third highest passer rating for any Husker QB in the last 15 years, behind–not that far behind– Casey Thompson's season (150) and Adrian Martinez' last season (149).
