4 answers we have after Nebraska football’s Spring Game

Following Nebraska’s Red-White Spring Game on Saturday, here are four questions that have been answered as the Huskers head into the summer.

Is Dylan Raiola ready for the spotlight? Albeit in a scrimmage setting, Raiola looked as comfortable as it gets. The freshman quarterback revealed after the game that he’d “fought back tears” in an emotional moment going through the Tunnel Walk for the first time — but he was all business on the field. Firing bullet passes and showing his touch on long throws to the sidelines, Raiola displayed a high level of quarterback play.

Has Nebraska improved at wide receiver? Even without a fully healthy wide receiver room, NU’s talent level at the position was evident. Of the Huskers’ two impact transfers, Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor, Banks played a limited role with one target while Neyor hauled in two passes for 26 yards.

True freshman Jacory Barney Jr. was a standout with a long touchdown catch, and prior to suffering an injury, redshirt freshman Demitrius Bell impressed as well. Alongside returning players such as Jaylen Lloyd, Malachi Coleman and Alex Bullock, it’s clear NU has upgraded at the position compared to last fall.

Can the Huskers cut down on turnovers? The real test will come when the Nebraska offense faces an opposing defense, but early returns are positive. After coughing up six fumbles in last year’s Spring Game, Nebraska had a clean day on the ground.

The only blemish came when each of NU’s freshman quarterbacks threw an interception, but neither represented an egregious mistake. For the most part, Nebraska took care of the ball in its spring scrimmage.

Does Nebraska have enough depth? The fact Nebraska was able to rest most of its veteran defensive starters and hold out a large number of players while still playing a full scrimmage is a good sign for the team’s depth.

Certain positions such as offensive line and wide receiver were tested by the full-scale scrimmage action, while Nebraska’s linebackers and secondary were filled with hungry, young players on Saturday. Reinforcements could be helpful at those affected positions, but otherwise, Nebraska’s depth held up in a big way.
