The ranking: No. 1 (AVCA, through Aug. 30)
Nebraska sits No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll released Aug. 31 (through games of Aug. 30), with 1,569 points and 57 first-place votes. Pittsburgh is No. 2 (1,510 points, 6 FPVs). Kentucky, Stanford, and Wisconsin round out the top five (NCAA.com AVCA table; huskers.com Sep. 3 preview).
Official notes add that the poll marks Nebraska’s 125th week all-time at No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll — most of any program — and that the Huskers have been ranked No. 1 to start a season in three of the last five years, including 2025 and 2022 (huskers.com).

How the Huskers got here: UNLV, Texas — and what does not count
Cornhuskers Wire (Sep. 1) reported that Nebraska stayed No. 1 after sweeping UNLV and then-No. 2 Texas at the Players Era Showcase in Las Vegas. Wire also notes Nebraska won the Spikes Under the Lights event at AT&T Stadium beforehand — and LATEST-REPORTING / schedule context treats those Spikes matches as exhibitions that do not count toward the official record. Live record after SDSU
