Illinois, by the results
Every score below is from ESPN’s Illinois schedule:
| Date | Opponent | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sep. 4 | UAB | W 42-23 |
| Sep. 12 | Duke | L 31-27 |
| Sep. 19 | Southern Illinois | W 48-10 |
| Sep. 26 | at Ohio State | L 42-19 |
| Oct. 3 | Purdue | L 24-17 |
| Oct. 10 | at Michigan State | W 38-37 |
| Oct. 24 | Oregon | W 21-10 |
| Oct. 31 | at Maryland | W 20-17 |
That Big Ten line works out to 3-2. Illinois was 2-3 overall after losing to Purdue on Oct. 3. It has not lost since.
The common-opponent problem
Nebraska and Illinois have played three of the same teams:
| Opponent | Nebraska | Illinois |
|---|---|---|
| Michigan State | W 31-13 (road) | W 38-37 (road) |
| Maryland | W 48-23 (home) | W 20-17 (road) |
| Oregon | L 17-14 (road) | W 21-10 (home) |
Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. Nebraska handled Michigan State and Maryland far more comfortably than Illinois did. Illinois did the one thing Nebraska could not: beat Oregon, and by 11. Common-opponent math is a weak predictor, but it does tell you this is not a team that folds against good defenses.

What Illinois just did at Maryland
Saturday’s 20-17 win at Maryland (ESPN box score) is the freshest film:
- Katin Houser threw a 16-yard touchdown to Brayden Trimble just before halftime.
- Javari Barnett broke a 64-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
- Ethan Moczulski kicked field goals of 45 and 26 yards, the second as time expired.
- Illinois ran for 184 yards on 33 carries (5.6 per carry) and totaled 407 yards.
- Illinois committed only three penalties for 15 yards.
That last line matters. Nebraska was flagged 8 times for 74 yards against Washington (ESPN).
Three keys for Nebraska
1. Protect the football. Three interceptions, one returned for the deciding touchdown, decided the Washington game. Against an Illinois team that has won its last two Big Ten games by one score, a single giveaway may be the game.
2. Hold up against the run. Nebraska’s defense allowed 32 rushing yards to Washington. Illinois just ran for 184 at Maryland, including a 64-yard score. If the Blackshirts’ run fits travel, Nebraska’s defense keeps it in this game regardless of the offense.
3. Finish the fourth quarter. Nebraska led entering the fourth at Oregon and for most of the fourth against Washington. It lost both. Illinois won at Maryland on the final snap. Late-game execution is the whole matchup.
The stakes
Win, and Nebraska is bowl eligible at 6-3 with Rutgers, Ohio State and Iowa left. Lose, and the Huskers are 5-4 on a four-game slide with the hardest part of November still ahead. HuskersToday will publish a same-night recap from the official box score after the final.
