Nebraska’s first real test of the Fred Hoiberg era tips at 6 p.m. CT Saturday on FS1 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The Huskers (1-0) meet Providence (1-0) in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off after a 106-64 opener over Le Moyne.
Account for Mack
Per Field Level Media, Georgetown transfer Malik Mack scored 12 points in Providence’s 83-56 win over Maine and once dropped 25 on Nebraska in the College Basketball Crown. Hoiberg called him dynamic with the ball, able to shoot, get downhill and find lob threats in transition.
Survive the steal party
Providence forced 23 turnovers and 17 steals against Maine. Hoiberg told SI’s All Huskers that Miles Byrd and Gavin Hightower combined for 12 of those steals and that the Friars are the most aggressive team Nebraska has faced this fall. “If you’re casual with the ball, he’s just going to take it from you,” Hoiberg said of Byrd.
Orme is a game-time decision
Senior forward Sam Orme, the Belmont transfer who averaged 12.7 points last season, did not play against Le Moyne. Hoiberg said Orme practiced into his load Thursday and will be a game-time decision. Pryce Sandfort led Nebraska with 20 in the opener, and the Huskers have won 23 consecutive regular-season nonconference games.
