What comes after 1,000
The next marks are close. Prince needs 1,100 points to crack Nebraska’s top 30 scorers, 1,134 for the top 25 and 1,285 for the top 20. Karen Jennings holds the school record with 2,405.
The opponent
Western Illinois is no tune-up. The Leathernecks went 26-6 last season, won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and played North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Mia Nicastro, the reigning OVC Player of the Year, averaged 24.1 points and 9.8 rebounds last season. Western Illinois opened with an 85-55 win over Clarke, when Kaylen Reed nearly had a triple-double with 16 points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
It is Western Illinois’ first trip to Lincoln since 2004, when Nebraska won 74-71 in the only previous meeting. Amy Williams is 8-1 against Leathernecks coach JD Gravina from her South Dakota days, though five of those wins came by four points or fewer.
Nebraska also got 15 points and nine rebounds from Amiah Hargrove and 14 from Natalie Potts in the opener, and its three freshmen, including McDonald’s All-American Ashlyn Koupal, all scored in their debuts.
