Here is the number that stings most this week in Lincoln. Per ESPN Stats and Info, as shared by ESPN’s Max Olson, Nebraska is the only team in FBS that has held a lead going into the fourth quarter of every game this season. The Huskers are 5-3 anyway, and they have lost three straight.
For context, Olson noted that James Madison has led through three quarters in eight of nine games, while Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA and Utah have each done it in seven of eight. Nebraska is the only one perfect through 45 minutes, and the only one of that group with a three-game skid.
Rhule: not going anywhere
Matt Rhule opened his Monday press conference with roughly 19 minutes of remarks, according to Husker Big Red. He addressed an incident in which a grown man directed profanity at his daughter, and he made clear he does not intend to quit. Rhule said he will keep fighting for the program, and for the fans listening to Husker games on the radio, not for the people crossing that line.
A short week for the offense
News Channel Nebraska reported Tuesday that the offense is chasing a quick turnaround on a short week after three games without the pieces to get back in the win column. Friday’s game gives the Huskers one fewer day to fix it.
The ask in Champaign
Nebraska (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten) plays at Illinois (5-3) Friday at 7 p.m. CT on FOX. One more win makes the Huskers bowl eligible. The formula is simple to say and has been hard to do: close.
