NU Dominates in Jumps at Husker Quad



LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska track and field team won 11 individual titles at the Husker Quad on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track. The Huskers concluded the home portion of the indoor schedule against Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.

The Husker men and women combined to sweep all of the jumps events on Saturday. The high jump, long jump, triple jump and also pole vault titles all went to Huskers. 

Papay Glaywulu won the men’s long jump title with a personal-best leap of 24-3 (7.39m). Terrol Wilson also jumped a personal best, 23-8 (7.21m), to finish second. Bennet Vinken finished third at 23-5 1/2 (7.15m). Glaywulu also won the triple jump title at 52-8 1/4 (16.06m) to lead a Husker-dominated field. Wilson was second again, jumping a personal-best 50-3 1/2 (15.33m), and Alexander Thompson was third at 49-6 1/4 (15.09m). 

Ieva Turke once again captured gold in the triple jump, leaping 41-8 1/2 (12.71m). Ashley McElmurry jumped 38-9 1/2 (11.82m) to place third. Lishanna Ilves claimed the women’s long jump title with a winning mark of 20-5 (6.22m). Darby Thomas was third with a leap of 19-0 (5.79m). 

Monica Aldrighetti won her second pole vault title of the season with a clearance of 13-1 3/4 (4.01m). She topped teammate Andy Jacobs (12-10, 3.91m), who was the runner-up. Competing unattached, Husker senior Tyler Loontjer won the pole vault title with a jump of 17-6 1/2 (5.35m), a new personal best. Garrison Hughes cleared 16-9 1/4 (5.11m) to finish behind Loontjer.

Michael Hoffer won his third men’s high jump title in as many tries this season. Hoffer cleared 6-9 (2.06m) to edge teammate Lincoln McPhillips, who cleared the same height, a personal best. Mayson Conner took third with a clearance of 6-7 (2.01m) in his first meet of the season. Riley Masten won the women’s high jump, clearing 5-5 3/4 (1.67m), while Madison Yerigan was third at 5-4 1/4 (1.63m).

Making his season debut, Burger Lambrechts Jr. captured the shot put title with a throw of 63-1 1/2 (19.24m), while teammate Kevin Shubert placed second with a mark of 61-7 1/2 (18.78m). Lambrechts also earned a top-three finish in the weight throw with a toss of 65-11 3/4 (20.11m). Marika Spencer took third in the women’s weight throw at 61-2 3/4 (18.66m).

Fresh off winning the Big Ten cross country championship, George Kusche made his season track debut on Saturday and did so in style, winning the mile in 4:01.53, more than 11 seconds faster than the next closest competitor. Kusche ran nearly the entire race with a sizable lead. 

Competing unattached, Judi Jones won the 3,000m in 9:35.04, which is a new standard-track personal best. Grace Pagone was the runner-up in 10:02.60, also a personal best. Also competing unattached, Elsa Forsberg took second in the women’s mile, running 4:44.50, which is a standard-track personal best. Erika Freyhof was third in 4:55.88.

Sadio Fenner was the runner-up in the men’s 3,000 meters in a time of 8:42.32. Mark Freyhof was third in 8:44.04.

Kerrigan Myers posted a 60-meter hurdles PR of 8.54 to take second, while Johanna Ilves was third in 8.55. Ilves set a new PR of 8.51 earlier in the day in prelims. Competing unattached, Luke Siedhoff was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles in 7.87. Darius Luff was third (7.91). 

Matthew Brown took third in the 60 meters (6.74). Jason Marchese led the NU men in the 600m, running a personal-best 1:20.58 to take third place. Tony Nou also finished third in the 400 meters in 48.36. Alex Nelson took third in the 200m (21.47). 

The men’s 4×400-meter relay (Cory Berg, Tony Nou, Alex Nelson, Bryce Barrett) finished second with a season-best time of 3:13.28. The Husker women (Kayla Hugg, Emma Algarin, Emily Ellis, Bella Hogue) took third in 3:51.30, a season best for the Big Red.

The Huskers are split next week between the SPIRE Pre-Big Ten Meet in Geneva, Ohio and the Hawkeye B1G Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
