Will Marshall shot a career-best 221 (+5) on his way to a career-best tie for 28th individually to lead the Nebraska men’s golf team to a 10th-place team finish in an 18-team field at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday.
Marshall, a junior from Elburn, Ill., fired a one-over-par 73 in Saturday’s final round on the par-72, 7,555-yard layout at the UNM Championship Golf Course. It followed another 73 in the second round, after opening the tournament with a 75 on Friday morning.
Seniors Caleb Badura (Aurora, Neb.) and Mark Foelbaek (Jelling, Denmark) tied for 36th individually at 223, just two strokes back of Marshall, while seniors Tom Westenberger (Wuppertal, Germany) and Tristan Nelko (Plymouth, Minn.) tied for 51st at 225. Nelko’s score tied his career best.
BYU ran away with the team championship with a three-round total of 841 (-23), 19 strokes in front of the hosts from New Mexico (860). Louisville finished third at 866 (+2). San Diego (867) and New Mexico State (870) rounded out the tournament’s top five. Nebraska finished with a solid three-round total of 885 (+21), just five strokes behind sixth-place Denver (880).
New Mexico State’s Aidan Thomas won individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 207 (-9).
Nebraska returns to tournament action at the Rich Harvest Farms Invitational in Sugar Grove, Ill., Oct. 2-4.
