IWCC Kicker Josh Jasek Commits to Nebraska Football

A Kicker?!?!?! My first ever article as a member of Corn Nation…is a KICKER?!?!?! Guys, did you plan this???

Akelo Roberts gets Richard Torres. I get a kicker.

All jokes aside the kicking game for the Cornhuskers prior to the emergence of LSU Grad Transfer, Connor Culp, had been woeful in recent memory. I don’t think I’ve fully recovered from the 2019 season and it’s carousel of kickers and punters (much love to Norfolk High Grad, Lane McCallum, on his kick at Northwestern in 2019 though). Many of the Big Red faithful might feel the same way I do, after a spoil of riches at the position for so many years.

But, it appears as if the Huskers are not quite comfortable about life after Connor Culp at the moment. Announced via his Twitter page this afternoon, Josh Jasek, recently named Second Team All Conference Kicker for the Iowa Western Community College Reivers, has committed to the Cornhuskers.

Jasek comes in with quite a reputation playing for Head Coach Scott Strohmeier’s Reivers squad that has seen a lot of it’s talent get snagged up by Division 1 Schools. A product of Iowa City West High School in Iowa City, IA, the 6’1” 175 lbs. Jasek made 11 of his 17 field goal attempts, with a career long of 56 yards, which also broke the IWCC Reivers record. As well as 41 of 44 on PAT attempts. Some videos on social media even show Jasek flexing his leg muscles punting distances of 55 and 70 yards with excellent hang time.

Jasek has four years of eligibility and plans to walk-on and arrive to campus hopefully during the second session of summer classes in July.

The kicking room was already pretty full when Jasek committed. Now boasting Redshirt Senior Connor Culp, Sophomore Chase Contreraz ( an IWCC Alum), Freshman Tyler Crawford, Walk-On Redshirt Freshman Gabe Heins, and incoming True Freshman Walk-On Kelen Meyer. Also, Husker coaches worked out former Morningside College and Gretna Dragons kicker, Brendan Franke, last Friday.

And let’s not forget punters Daniel Cerni, William Przystup, and Grant Detlefsen.

With so many names and so many bodies you may wonder…why add another to the mix?

Cerni, if healthy, I believe will be in line for first crack at Punter duties. Crawford and Przystup have experience, with Detlefsen to follow and battle it out. Meyer, although a walk on of this most recent signing class, was seen as a smart snag by coaches upon signing day. Contreraz is a year removed from the Reivers, now it looks like he’ll have some competition from a fellow alum of the program.

Well…here it goes…my first dive into the minds of Frost & Co. as they try to end the skid of three straight losing seasons. I don’t envy them their task, or mine for that matter. Imagine I am wrong in my analysis of future recruits. You’ll never trust me again.

Husker Nation is getting restless and while people are not pounding down the gates of Memorial Stadium yet, another season of heartache might be enough to start the march to Lincoln.

I am thinking one of two things is happening here. 1) Coach Frost is still having nightmares about the 2019 season, like I am, and never wants to be out of an abundance of kickers. Or 2) Things at kicker might not be where they need to be post-Culp era.

Kickoffs have been an area of concern for the staff, perhaps this is a way to find someone with the ability to put the ball ten yards through the back of the end zone, as opposed to five yards ahead of the goal line.

Whatever the case may be. We certainly hope some positives will come from this most recent commitment.

Welcome Josh Jasek to the Cornhuskers!

Maybe next time I’ll get a Running Back…
