Huskers Shut Out Lopers in 7-0 Win

The Nebraska softball team played Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday night, winning 7-0.

The Huskers tallied nine hits including home runs from Brooke Andrews, Abbie Squier and Caitlynn Neal, while holding the Lopers to only one hit.

Nebraska-Kearney’s only hit of the game came in the first inning when Abbie Jo Vodicka hit a double down the right field line. The hit alone was not enough to bring in any runs for the Lopers.

NU started off strong adding a pair of doubles from Brooke Andrews and Cam Ybarra to get the first run on the board.

After a quiet second inning, Brooke Andrews hit a solo home run over the left field fence to make it 2-0 in the third inning.

Squier extended the lead in the fourth inning to 3-0 with a solo home run of her own to left center.

The Huskers had their biggest inning of the night during the bottom of the sixth. Courtney Wallace started the inning off with a single to center field and Abbey Newlun followed with a single to left field. Squier reached on an error by the shortstop, bringing in Wallace for a run. Kaylin Kinney reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Newlun. A single from Olivia Ferrell extended the lead to 6-0.

Nebraska got its third home run of the night in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo homerun from Caitlynn Neal over the center field fence.

Kinney threw five innings in the circle for the Huskers, striking out six batters and holding the Lopers to only one hit. Ferrell faced three batters in the top of the sixth, striking out each one. Karlee Seevers pitched the final three outs for NU.

The Huskers are back in action Saturday, Oct. 16 for a game against South Dakota at Bowlin Stadium at 10:00 a.m. The game will be live-streamed on Facebook and Twitter.
