Huskers Set to Compete at Chile Pepper Festival



The Nebraska cross country team continues its season at the 33rd annual Chile Pepper Festival hosted by Arkansas on Friday, Oct. 1 in Fayetteville, Ark. The women’s 5K will begin at 5 p.m., with the men’s 8K to follow at 5:30 p.m.
 
The women’s field is spread across two races and features 79 teams, including 12 nationally ranked programs at the Division I, Division II and NJCAA level. The men’s field has 75 teams competing and has 11 nationally ranked programs at the Division I, Division II and NJCAA level set to compete.
 
Last Time Out
The Nebraska women placed second in the 5K at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite with 41 points. Erika Freyhof paced the Huskers with a time of 17:07.3 to place second. Freyhof’s second-place performance is her second consecutive top-five finish at the Greeno-Dirksen Invite after placing fifth in 2019. Grace Pagone and Hannah Godwin also finished in the top-10 for the Big Red, with Pagone placing fourth (17:29.5) and Godwin clocking a 17:42.8 to finish 10th. Taya Skelton was the next Husker to cross the finish line with a time of 18:00.1 to place 18th. Jacquelyn Abanses rounded out the scoring for Nebraska with a 19th-place finish and time of 18:02.5.
 
The Husker men finished fourth overall with 106 points. Ryan Martins led Nebraska, finishing ninth in the 8K with a time of 24:25.4. Mark Freyhof posted a time of 25:03.9 to finish 27th. Bailey Timmons covered the course in 25:43.9 to finish 46th, followed by Brian Beach in 49th-place with a time of 25:47.5. Ryan Eastman placed 53rd and crossed the finish line with a time of 25:53.1.
