Huskers land USC transfer RB Markese Stepp | Football

USC running back Markese Stepp (30) breaks away from Arizona defensive back Christian Roland-Wallace during a game on Nov. 14, 2020,  in Tucson, Ariz.

For the second time in as many days, Nebraska added an experienced offensive player to its ranks from the NCAA’s transfer portal.

On Tuesday, the Huskers landed a verbal commitment from former Southern California running back Markese Stepp.

Stepp spent three seasons at USC overall, redshirting in 2018 before seeing consistent playing time in the past two years.

In 2020, he rushed 45 times for 165 yards and tied for the team lead with three rushing touchdowns touchdowns. He split carries roughly evenly with two other backs, each of whom also had 54 and 46 carries, respectively, and averaged 4.6 yards and 3.8 yards each compared to Stepp’s 3.7. The Trojans, of course, only played six games this fall due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions and the Pac-12’s shortened season. USC elected not to play in bowl game after a 5-1 regular season.

In 2019, Stepp had 48 for 307 yards (6.4 per carry) and three scores.

Stepp, from Indianapolis, was considered a four-star prospect out of high school. Among other schools who recruited him out of the portal after he decided to transfer from USC, at one point Wisconsin was considered perhaps the favorite to land his commitment.

Stepp is listed at 6-foot and 235 pounds and is a powerful runner. His longest rush in three collegiate seasons was a 35-yarder last year against Washington.
