Huskers Face Tough Field at Desert Mountain

Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Nebraska Men’s Golf Team will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., this weekend to face a tough field at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by the Michigan Wolverines. The tournament will be played on the par 72, 7,107 yard Outlaw Course on the Desert Mountain resort.

The Huskers will be a part of a 12-team field that consists of three teams in the Big Ten, Michigan, Northwestern and Purdue, along with three teams from the SEC, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Mississippi State. Vanderbilt is ranked 10th by Golf Stat which makes them the highest rated team in the field. Arkansas Little-Rock, Ball State, Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois will also be in the field.

The first and second rounds will be played on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m CT. The final round will begin Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com each day of the tournament.  Live updates can also be found on the Nebraska Men’s Golf twitter page @HuskersGolf.

The Huskers are competing in their first stroke-play tournament of the spring season after finishing fourth at the Big Ten Match Play Championships on Feb. 7-8. The Huskers will be led by senior Tanner Owen who looks to build off a strong fall where he had one top-five finish and one top-15 finish. The senior from Parkville, Mo., was Nebraska’s top finisher in three out of the four tournaments in the fall.

Junior Branden Meyer will be returning to familiar territory as his hometown of Gilbert, Ariz., is just 40 miles from the Outlaw Course. In his first year as a Husker, Meyer was a consistent piece for the Huskers. Meyer’s stroke average was 75.58 as he cracked the top-15 one time at the Prairie Club Invitational.

Sophomore Caleb Badura hopes to build off his 4-0 showing at the Big Ten Match Play Championships. Badura was the first ever Husker to win all four matches at the event. Badura looks to improve on his 77.44 stroke average in the fall with his best 54-hole score coming at the Rod Myers/Duke Invitational where he shot a 226 (+10).

Junior Tom Westenberger came on strong for the Huskers in the latter part of the fall season, competing in the final three tournaments for the Huskers. Westenberger recorded one top-15 finish at the Maridoe Intercollegiate and was 1-2-1 at the Big Ten Match Play Championships.

Participating in his first stroke-play tournament in 16 months, junior Daniel Pearson hopes to provide the Husker lineup with some veteran leadership. In three events in his sophomore season, Pearson recorded a stroke average of 74.88 with his best 54-hole score coming at the William Tucker Invitational where he fired a 223 (+7).

“I’m excited to play and hopefully to contribute well to our team,” Pearson said. “I feel good about my game, and that it is in a good place. I expect to play well and give 100% of my effort and see where it goes.”
