Heptathletes Begin Action at Illini B1G Multi-Meet



The Nebraska track and field team’s heptathletes began competition on day one of the Illini B1G Multi-Meet at the UI Armory in Champaign, Illinois on Friday. 

Husker senior Zach Podraza leads the Huskers after four events with 2,701 points, which puts him in fourth place out of 11 competitors. Sophomore Kolby Heinerikson is in fifth place with 2,643 points. The 11-man field includes heptathletes from Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. 

Podraza was the runner-up in the first event, the 60 meters, with a time of 7.30. He also finished the day as the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 6-0 3/4 (1.85m). 

Heinerikson was the fourth-place finisher in both the shot put and high jump. He set a PR in the shot put of 40-2 (12.24m) and matched his high jump PR of 5-11 1/2 (1.82m). 

Wisconsin’s Cade Amborn leads with 2,791 points.

The heptathlon continues with the final three events beginning at Noon on Saturday. Also, the Husker women will take part in the pentathlon on Saturday. The first event, the 60-meter hurdles, begins at 10 a.m. Jamieson Battistella, Johanna Ilves, Kate Kadrmas, Kerrigan Myers and Teri Zanker will all compete for the Big Red.

Heptathlon

Noon – 60m Hurdles

12:45 p.m. – Pole Vault

2:30 p.m. – 1,000m

Pentathlon

10 a.m. – 60m Hurdles

10:40 a.m. – High Jump

12:30 p.m. – Shot Put

1:40 p.m. – Long Jump

2:50 p.m. – 800m
